The Creams
to me is a
unique
and
exquisite color and also my most
favorite. I have gotten dachshunds in both
Smooth
Hair and Long Hairs.
Some
Dachshund Breeders
will tell you the only true English creams dachshund come only in the Long Hairs. I
am not here to dispute this claim, but I myself have gotten the
creams with the Chinchilla Dilution Gene Series ("C") in both Coats, Long & Smooth.
Every
dachshund has
two alleles
from
each
gene
series:
one inherited from their
sire
and
one inherited from their
dam.
The combination of alleles that a dachshund inherits from their parents
determines their color, pattern, and coat.
Just like humans, this is what makes every puppy unique.
I am in no way an
expert on the subject and in fact I learn something new almost everyday.
When you start researching the genetics of your dachshund, you can get
quite confused. Out of lack of knowledge and experience I have in the past
register a dachshund the wrong color.
I believe a Cream
with the chinchilla
"C" gene
Series is a True Cream
rather it is quote: English/UK or rather it comes from
Australia or New Zealand or born right here in the United States. Both
parents need to carry for the Cream (chinchilla gene) to produce the
cream.
I do not advertise my Creams as "English" creams
or "American" creams. Cream is cream,
no matter where it was born. Though the Creams, if you go far enough back
in a Pedigree will have English (UK) Breeding
and first appeared in a litter sired by:
Eng Ch Kizzhar Kavalcade
( a gorgeous red).
Usually what breeders call the American Cream is
the result of the Dilute Red gene.
Also some
Dachshund Breeders will place a high dollar price for a Cream. To an
degree I understand this with the initial cost of importing a dog to the
US, as I have 4 dogs that were imported and the cost to do so is quite
expensive. My advice though would be cautious about paying thousands of
dollars for very young, not even weaned puppies. Do your homework before
paying such prices. Be aware that a lot of commercial puppy
breeders/backyard dachshund breeders in the U.S. have been importing poor quality
creams from the UK puppy breeders/backyard
dachshund breeders for several years
now and are advertising them as
"English Creams"
and are asking outrageous prices for them.
Just because a dog has English Creams in its background
does not
guarantee that it is a
quality dog
or that it is worth the thousands of dollars being asked.
I will say there
is nothing like a Long Hair Exquisite Cream Dachshund, but then the Long
Hairs are my favorites too.
Most of the Cream
Dachshund Puppies are born the color of what I describe as a charcoal
color or donkey gray as some refer to them. As they mature some lose
most of the overlay shading, although some will keep the darker overlay in
different degrees. These are those that are referred to as Shaded Creams.
I am learning
from litter to litter more about the Creams. I have also found that the
"E Red" (alleles,
a code for a gene)
can also effect the shade of cream and in some cases
are actually a shade of red instead of cream. It can also dilute a pattern
of a dog. Meaning that although a dog might appear solid in color, the E
Red could have diluted the Brindle or Dapple pattern and not until that
dog has a litter of pups will you know, but one of those puppies parents
would be Brindle or Dapple.
Alleles
is usually the DNA Code for the sequences that code for a Gene.
An
example is a
gene for
a blossom color
in many species of a flower. A single
gene controls the color of the petals,
but
there
may be
several
different versions
(or
alleles) of the gene.
One
version might result in red petals while another white petals. The
resulting color of an individual flower will depend on which two alleles
it possesses for the gene and how the two interact.
Both the
English Creams and the American Creams carry the same
dominate and recessive genes.
The
difference with the True creams they will have
2 copies
of the Chinchilla Dilution
(C Series). The American Cream will have
2 copies
of the Blue Dilution
( D Series).
I have personally
had puppies born as cream as cream can be and as they matured turned a
diluted clear red. Meaning although the
Chinchilla gene
might be behind
them the little E
Red affected the
outcome of the adult color. Again the Chinchilla Gene has to be behind
both parents to produce the luscious cream
color. It all depends how the alleles (the version) within the gene pool mixes.

color as they mature into that luscious Cream.
